Let’s get you writing.

MDX Studio opens Markdown and MDX files on your Mac. Your files stay where they are, and edits save back to the originals.

Open your writing

Choose Writing folders, then Choose folder or Choose files. You can also drag files or folders into Open documents. Find my writing searches a location you choose and suggests folders to open. Review those suggestions before connecting a folder.

Save and recover a draft

Changes save after a short pause. Check the status below the editor. If saving fails, keep the app open, preserve your unsaved text, and use Retry save after fixing the permission or storage issue.

Document history and diff compares earlier versions and can restore text. Unsaved drafts also have local crash recovery when storage is available. Keep a separate backup of important documents.

A folder or file is unavailable

Reconnect the drive or cloud folder, then select the original again through Choose folder or Choose files. Cloud-only files may need to be downloaded in Finder first. For local images or additional documents beside a selected file, connect its containing folder.

Another app changed my document

The visible editor checks for outside changes. If you have unsaved changes, it asks you to review both versions. Choosing the disk version is undoable. MDX Studio is not a simultaneous collaboration service; cloud synchronization is handled by your storage provider.

Preview and writing review

The built-in preview displays common Markdown offline. It does not run document scripts or custom MDX components. For those components, configure a local website preview in the folder’s options.

Writing review uses local rules and keeps your text on your Mac. Suggestions highlight writing to reconsider; they do not establish who wrote a document. Optional Unslop is separate: add your own API key, then explicitly choose Score document or Rewrite selection. These actions send prose to Unslop, use account-linked service records and may spend credits; rewrites also use external AI providers. Review a revision before choosing Apply revision. Removing a key clears local run snapshots, while remote retention follows the service and provider policies. Read the privacy policy before submitting writing.

System requirements

The current build requires an Apple silicon Mac and macOS 13.5 or later. Documents can be up to 2 MB. Apple Intelligence suggestions require macOS 26 or later with Apple Intelligence supported, enabled, and available. Discovery also works without it.

The app cannot start

MDX Studio uses local port 4000. Close another development server using that port, then retry. You do not need to install Node, npm, or a website server to use the built-in editor.
