Steel and Glass: Exploring Chicago's Architectural DNA
A photographic journey through Chicago's iconic architecture, from historic facades to modern skyline giants
Steel and Glass: Exploring Chicago's Architectural DNA
Chicago has always held a special place in my heart as a photographer. There's something about the way light bounces off glass and steel, the interplay of shadows between buildings, and the sheer variety of architectural styles that makes this city an endless source of inspiration.
The Architectural Playground
Walking through Chicago with a camera is like having access to the world's greatest outdoor architecture museum. Every corner reveals something new—whether it's the intricate details of a historic facade or the bold geometry of a modern skyscraper reaching toward the clouds.

During my recent exploration, I was particularly drawn to the contrast between Chicago's historic buildings and its modern architectural marvels. The city tells its story through these structures—each era leaving its mark in stone, steel, and glass.
Capturing the Details
What fascinates me most about architectural photography is the opportunity to capture both the grand vision and the intricate details. A building might be impressive from a distance, but zoom in on the craftsmanship of a corner detail or the pattern of windows, and you discover an entirely different kind of beauty.

The interplay of light and shadow on these surfaces creates natural drama throughout the day. Early morning light catches the eastern faces of buildings, while late afternoon sun creates long shadows that emphasize the three-dimensional qualities of the architecture.
Technical Approach
For this series, I focused on:
- Wide-angle perspectives to capture the scale and context of buildings
- Detail shots highlighting architectural elements and craftsmanship
- Leading lines using the geometry of the buildings to guide the viewer's eye
- Contrast between old and new, ornate and minimal, light and shadow

The Story in Stone and Steel
Each building in Chicago has a story to tell. From the ornate facades of the early 20th century to the clean lines of modern minimalism, the city's architecture reflects the evolution of design philosophy, engineering capabilities, and cultural values.
What strikes me most is how these buildings coexist—not just physically sharing the same streets, but creating a visual dialogue about progress, tradition, and the human desire to reach ever higher.
