Design creative US flags that technically follow the Flag Code (4 U.S.C. §1) but look wildly different from the traditional flag. Learn what's required by law versus convention!
Note: Stripe heights are fixed at 1/13 of flag height per official specifications.
What's Required: The US Flag Code (4 U.S.C. §1) only specifies: 13 alternating red and white stripes, and 50 white stars on a blue field.
What's NOT Required: Stripe proportions, flag aspect ratio, star arrangement, star size, or the exact shape/size of the blue field!
Fun Fact: Throughout history, the US flag has had many different star arrangements including circles, diamonds, and various grid patterns.

About the US Flag Code
What IS Required (4 U.S.C. §1):
- Thirteen horizontal stripes
- Stripes alternate red and white
- Fifty stars
- Stars must be white
- Stars must be on a blue field (union)
What is NOT Required:
- Specific flag dimensions or aspect ratio
- Traditional star arrangement pattern
- Star size or rotation
- Blue field shape or exact size
Note: In this playground, stripe heights are fixed at 1/13 of flag height to match official U.S. flag specifications (Executive Order 10834).
Historical Note: The US flag has evolved many times throughout history, with various star arrangements including circles, diamonds, and different grid patterns. The current 6-5-6-5-6-5-6-5-6 arrangement became standard in 1960, but it's not required by law!
