Giant Text

Type a few words and they fill the screen, big enough to read from across a room. Here is how to drive it, and what to do when something looks wrong.

The controls

  • iPhone & iPadTap once to start editing, type your message, then tap Done. Two-finger tap anywhere opens Options. Shake the device to undo.
  • MacClick to edit. Right-click (or Control-click) for Options, which also has Edit Text.
  • Apple TVPress Play/Pause to edit the text. Press Menu to open Options.
  • EverywherePress Escape to close a menu or leave editing.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my text sideways on iPhone?

That is deliberate, and it is the whole point of the app. Your iPhone stays in portrait while the message renders sideways, so the long edge of the screen becomes the width of your text and the letters get as large as the screen physically allows. Hold the phone normally and turn it to read.

If you would rather it rotated the other way, open Options and change Text Rotation from Left to Right.

How do I make the text bigger?

You don't — Giant Text always uses the largest size that fits. If it looks smaller than you expected, the message is simply long. Shorter messages get bigger letters. You can also raise Max Lines in Options to let a longer message wrap over up to five lines instead of shrinking to fit one.

How do I change the colors?

Open Options and expand Theme. There are 20 themes, each previewed with a live "Aa" in its own colors. Every theme has a separate light and dark variant and follows your system appearance, which you can override under Display › Appearance.

Turn on Random Theme (Daily) and the app picks a different theme for you every 24 hours.

Is there a limit on how much text I can enter?

Yes, 500 characters. Giant Text is built for short messages meant to be read at a distance — past a couple of lines the letters get too small for the app to be much use.

How do the animations work?

Options has four choices. None keeps the text still. Bloom scales each letter in turn, Ripple sends a wave through the line, and Jitter shakes the message. The Intensity slider controls how strong the effect is.

The widget is not showing my message

The widget updates when you change your text, and otherwise refreshes periodically — iOS decides the exact timing, so it can lag by a few minutes. Open the app once to push the current message across, then remove and re-add the widget if it still looks stale.

I lost my text

Your message is saved on the device as you type. If you cleared it by accident, open Options and choose Undo — on iPhone you can also just shake the device.

Does it need an internet connection?

No. Giant Text makes no network requests at all and works permanently in airplane mode. There is no account and nothing to sign in to.

What do you collect?

Nothing. No analytics, no tracking, no advertising, no crash reporting, no third-party SDKs. What you type stays on your device. The full detail is in the privacy policy.

What do I need to run it?

iOS and iPadOS 18.5 or later, macOS 14 or later, or visionOS 2.5 or later. It also runs on Apple TV.
