Promptly privacy policy

Updated October 2026. Developer: Nathan Fennel.

Your scripts and recordings

Promptly stores scripts, their formatting and titles, tutorial scripts, and app preferences on your device. It does not require a developer account. On iPhone and iPad, you can choose to record front-camera video and microphone audio while reading. The app saves a companion JSON file with the recording identifier, video filename, script title and text, language, transcription status, and recognized speech with recording-relative segment time codes. A pending or failed transcript does not mean the video was lost.

On-device speech processing

Microphone access is used for voice scrolling and recordings you start. Camera access is used for optional video recording. Speech Recognition access allows Apple's on-device Speech framework to follow your voice and transcribe saved recordings. Promptly does not send audio, scripts, or recognized speech to the developer or a cloud transcription provider. Apple may download a speech model for your selected language. Language and device support determine whether on-device recognition is available.

Recorded speech is saved in the video and its companion file. Recognition can differ from what was said. Time codes describe recognized speech segments, not guaranteed word-level alignment. The script snapshot is stored separately from recognized speech so another application can distinguish your prepared text from what the recognizer heard.

Private iCloud synchronization

iCloud sync is enabled by default for new installations; existing saved choices are preserved. You can turn it off in Settings and restart the app to apply that change. When sync is enabled and available, scripts and their formatting use your private CloudKit database. Videos and companion files use your private iCloud Drive app container. Devices signed into the same Apple Account can receive these files. Transfers depend on Apple's account, storage, connectivity, and background-transfer settings. Local saves remain on the device while a transfer needs attention.

The developer does not operate a script or recording server and cannot read your private CloudKit or iCloud Drive library. Apple provides iCloud storage and device backups under its own privacy practices. Turning off sync does not automatically delete previously uploaded files, copies on other devices, or backups. Preserve local changes and exports before removing app data.

Nearby remote control and Apple Watch

If you choose remote control, Promptly uses Bonjour on your local network to find another device running the app. A prompter accepts control only after you allow it and pair using its displayed code. The encrypted connection sends control commands and status information, including device name, selected script title, playback or pause state, progress, and session identifiers. It does not transfer script bodies, microphone audio, videos, or transcripts through the remote-control connection.

Your Apple Watch communicates with its paired iPhone using Apple's Watch Connectivity. It can control the phone's prompter or relay commands through a phone paired to a Mac or iPad prompter. The phone and target app must remain available; the Watch does not operate a separate internet control service. Device names and script titles may be visible to someone viewing the controller or Watch.

Exports and other services

When you export or share a script, video, or companion file, the destination you select receives it and handles that copy under its own practices. Saving to Photos requires the permission you grant for that action. Shared files can contain your face, voice, prepared script, and recognized speech.

Promptly has no advertising SDK, analytics SDK, or tracking feature. Support and privacy links make ordinary requests to the website you open. If you contact the developer, the details you provide are used to respond; website hosting and contact services may process connection information and your message.

Your choices

You can edit or delete scripts in the app, change iCloud sync in Settings, end a remote connection, and stop allowing remote control. Manage Camera, Microphone, Speech Recognition, Local Network, and Photos permissions in Apple settings. Manage iCloud storage and backups separately through Apple. Removing the app from one device does not erase exports or copies on other devices.
