Promptly support

Updated October 2026. Developer: Nathan Fennel.

Start with the tutorial scripts

Your library includes scripts explaining how to use Promptly and sync across devices. You can edit these like your other scripts. Choose a script, open the prompter, and start voice scrolling. Allow Microphone and Speech Recognition access when asked. Manual scrolling remains available without voice access.

Voice scrolling follows recognized speech; it can be affected by the selected speech language, background noise, and microphone. Adjust text size and line spacing in Settings. On Mac, position the prompter near your camera. On iPhone or iPad, place the device at eye level and read from the area nearest the front camera.

Record on iPhone or iPad

Enable Camera recording in Settings or the prompter options. Allow Camera and Microphone access. Start voice scrolling first if you want the script to follow your speech while recording, then press Record. Press Finish recording to save the captured video. Closing the prompter or leaving the app also ends the recording.

Open Recordings to play a saved video or share the video and its companion speech file. Transcription runs on-device after saving. Preparing means it has not finished; if it needs attention, allow Speech Recognition access, select a supported language, and choose Retry on-device transcription. The video remains saved when transcription fails. An interrupted recording keeps its captured portion and a warning.

The JSON companion identifies its matching video and includes the prepared script separately from recognized speech. Speech segment start and end times are measured in seconds from the beginning of that video. Recognition may be imperfect, and these are segment time codes rather than exact timings for every word.

Use the same library on your devices

Sign into the same Apple Account on your devices and enable iCloud Drive. iCloud sync is on by default for new installations; an existing saved choice is preserved. Check that iCloud sync is on in Promptly's Settings on each device, and restart Promptly after changing the setting. Scripts use private CloudKit storage, while recording files use private iCloud Drive storage.

Check Sync & privacy for script transfer status. In Recordings, check each recording's transfer status and request a download on another device when needed. Apple continues large-file transfers in the background. If iCloud is unavailable or full, your local files remain available. Check Apple Account access, free iCloud storage, and connectivity, then retry. A local save is not confirmation that another device has received it.

Control a prompter from Apple Watch

Install Promptly's Watch companion from your paired iPhone. Open a prompter on your iPhone to control it from the Watch. To control a Mac or iPad, open a prompter there, choose Allow remote control, then connect your iPhone using the code shown on that device. Keep Promptly open on the phone and target device while the Watch relays controls.

Devices must share a reachable local network and allow Local Network access where requested. Choose the intended prompter before sending controls. Disconnect or stop allowing control to end access. Watch commands control prompting; they do not start a camera recording. A stale or unavailable Watch state requires refreshing the connection.

Permissions and recovery

If access was denied, open Apple settings and enable the permission for the feature you want. Recording needs a physical front camera and microphone. Voice scrolling and recording transcripts require a supported on-device speech language. Promptly uses macOS 26 and iOS or iPadOS 26 or later for this speech pipeline.

If the library cannot open, Promptly keeps its stored files and offers Retry. Check free device storage and iCloud access. Preserve scripts, recordings, and unsynced changes before reinstalling or deleting app data. Removing the app does not automatically remove iCloud data or files you exported.
