A science museum outing, a nature documentary, and a handwritten note.
Today, I took my kids to a science museum. While we were there, we watched a 45-minute nature documentary.
They didn’t want to go. They complained. One slept through most of it. There were tears because we weren’t in the front row and had to go up a few rows to our seats. When it was over, they couldn’t get out of the theater fast enough.
Not exactly a glowing review.
Then tonight, I got this note: a plan to make a movie theater tomorrow, complete with a drawing of popcorn and two handmade tickets.
Somewhere between the complaints, the tears, and the rush to leave, something stuck.
It’s easy to judge an outing by how everyone acts while you’re there. Were they interested? Was it worth the effort? Sometimes the answer shows up later, on a piece of paper, with tickets attached.
The things we do with our kids can matter more than their reaction in the moment lets on.
They notice. They do enjoy things. It sparks creativity. It is worth the effort.
