Tabs and the sidebar

01Open, close, and bring back a tab.⌘T⌘W⇧⌘T

02Cycle through tabs, then jump straight to one.⌃Tab⌃⇧Tab⌘1⌘9Settings, Shortcuts can make ⌃Tab cycle in the order you used tabs, the way ⌘Tab does between apps, instead of stepping down the sidebar.

03Step through all four sidebar widths, then hide it entirely.⌥⌘`⌥⌘1⌥⌘2⌥⌘3⇧⌘LHidden, minimal favicons, compact cards, wide cards. The compact and wide widths show the page, not the title.

04In the widest sidebar, watch the card titles with a few similar tabs open.Each page gets named twice, the product and the page, and the card puts whichever half tells this tab apart from its neighbors on top. Turn that off in Settings, Appearance to fall back to plain titles.

05Hold Control and hover a background tab without clicking it.A live peek of that page appears while you stay where you are. Settings, Appearance can pin the peek to the top middle of the screen, which puts it right under the webcam so checking it still reads as eye contact on a call.

06Show every open tab as a card and steer with the arrow keys.⌘OThe sidebar answers which tabs you have. This answers which one was the page you want.

07Right-click a tab and read the whole menu.Pin, mute, duplicate, move to top, convert to incognito, add to split, share, copy URL, move to group, and a per-tab memory-saving policy.

08Make a group from the folder button above the sidebar, then drag a tab into it.The same menu holds containers and workspaces, which are different ideas covered later.

09Click a link on a site that opens things in new tabs.The new tab can split off its source with a mitosis animation, and can open directly beside it. Both are independent switches in Settings, General.Try it: Wikipedia's Mitosis article Try it: Apple.com

10Press and hold a link for half a second instead of clicking it.The page starts loading the moment you press down, and a preview panel appears once it has actually loaded. Let go early and the prefetch is cancelled.
